Vision, visual impairment and falls

Summary

This presentation will discuss the relationship between vision and falls, how visual impairment affects falls risk, and review current intervention strategies for the prevention of falls in older individuals with and without visual impairment. The presentation will also discuss the important role that optometrists have in falls prevention, through appropriate visual assessment, management, referral and/or education of their patients.

  • To understand why falls are an important health issue for older adults and how visual impairment and ageing affect balance and falls;
  • To be aware of the current evidence regarding vision-based strategies for falls prevention;
  • To be aware of the ways in which optometrists can reduce falls risk in their older patients with and without visual impairment
