Scleral stiffness and myopia progression

Myopia control is the hot topic in optometry right now. The presentation will focus on scleral stiffness and its role in myopia progression and how it is affected by factors such as intra-ocular pressure, convergence and accommodation.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of the talk the delegates should be able to:

  • Understand how the sclera changes with age
  • Understand scleral mechanical properties such as creep resistance
  • Appreciate the differences in scleral resistance between myopes and emmetropes
  • Understand the effects of IOP on scleral compliance
  • Understand the effect of convergence and accommodation on IOP and axial length
  • Understand the relationship between intra-ocular pressures, cerebro-spinal fluid pressure and myopia development
