Dr George Smith

Biography

Dr  Smith qualified in Medicine in 1982 at Dundee University and has trained in both the UK and Australia (where he did a corneal fellowship at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne, in 1992).

He was the director of the corneal and external eye disease service at the University Hospital in Coventry, UK, from 1996 until 2014. His services there included a position as lead clinician for the cataract service, as well as Clinical Director from 2006 to 2009.

His areas of specialty include refractive surgery, where he has a particular interest in providing spectacle independence following cataract surgery by using the new multifocal and toric intraocular lenses. He is a qualified user of the LenSx femtosecond cataract laser and uses this to good advantage in providing the required precision to get the best from those types of so-called premium implants. His preference is also to use topical anaesthesia for cataract surgery (no injection close to the eye required). Dr Smith also has extensive experience in treating keratoconus and other diseases of the cornea, corneal surgery including a wide range of keratoplasty techniques, as well as in general ophthalmology, glaucoma and macular degeneration.
